AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE
Every American should have access to quality, affordable health care. As Attorney General, I will defend the Affordable Care Act and hold pharmaceutical and health insurance companies accountable to make health care more affordable for Minnesota families.
Defend the Affordable Care Act
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has helped more than 250,000 Minnesotans access quality, affordable health care. I will defend the ACA from attempts to undermine access to affordable care and will protect coverage for pre-existing conditions to ensure Minnesotans continue to receive the high-quality care they expect and deserve. Nearly 13,000 Minnesota seniors are among those now covered under the ACA.
Medicaid provides essential access to affordable health care for 1.2 million Minnesotans. This includes more than 100,000 Minnesota seniors, including half of all nursing home residents. As Attorney General, I will fight back against attempts to undermine this essential health care coverage, to protect access to affordable health care and keep costs down for Minnesota families. I will also oppose so-called ‘work requirements’ that would kick deserving Minnesotans off the Medicaid coverage they need.
Stop Price-Gouging by Big Pharmaceutical Companies
Big pharmaceutical companies are making millions by unfair price hikes on generic prescription drugs. They also are abusing patent law to keep cheaper medicine off the market. As Attorney General, I will hold these companies accountable, cracking down on dirty tricks that raise prices and make health care less affordable for families.
Hold Health Insurance Companies and Care Providers Accountable
Minnesotans pay too much for health care to worry about whether they’re getting treated fairly by their health insurance company. That’s why, as Attorney General, I will ensure that these massive companies follow the rules in how they bill people for health care, to ensure prices are not inflated and to protect people from aggressive collection tactics that harass Minnesotans who are already working hard to cover their costs. I will also enforce antitrust law to ensure that health insurance companies are meeting their obligation to serve our communities, especially in Greater Minnesota.
Crack Down on the Opioid Epidemic
Pharmaceutical companies made billions of dollars pushing opioid pills on our communities using deceptive and aggressive marketing tactics. They knew these drugs were addictive when they pushed them on Minnesotans. As your Attorney General, I will hold those companies accountable to provide essential funding for opioid abuse treatment and prevention efforts throughout our state.
Protect Women's Access to Safe Health Care Choices
As your Attorney General, I will always defend the right of Minnesota women to make their own health care choices with their doctors. I will oppose any new laws that would undermine this right, and will defend Minnesota and federal law that protects this essential health coverage.
A FAIR ECONOMY
As Attorney General, I will always be a friend to working men and women and their families. Period. I will stand up to companies that deceive Minnesotans and violate our antitrust laws. As Attorney General, I will level the playing field to make our economy work better for all Minnesotans, not just those at the top.
Protecting Workers’ Paychecks
While most employers pay workers what they earn and deserve, some do not pay workers their full pay for their hard work, cheating them out of overtime pay or the minimum wage. I will partner with the MN Department of Labor and Industry to enforce wage theft laws and hold offenders accountable by forcing them to repay any stolen wages, plus interest. Last month, the Supreme Court voted to take away workers' rights to file a class-action lawsuit for employment law violations. This decision tilts the playing field in favor of large companies and their armies of lawyers. As the People's Lawyer, I will level the field by filing cases on behalf of all workers who get cheated out of their hard-earned pay.
Affordable and Fair Housing
When Minnesotans save up to buy a home, the last thing they should be worried about is predatory and fraudulent mortgages. I’ll put a stop to mortgage fraud and abuse and fight back against lenders who trap our seniors in reverse mortgages that erode their hard-earned home equity. I will also work to level the playing field between landlords and renters and combat the eviction crisis that is putting too many Minnesota families out on the street. It’s been 50 years since Congress passed the Fair Housing Act to eliminate discrimination in lending, but too many of our neighbors are still consistently turned away or charged more for housing. As Attorney General, I will sue lenders and landlords who violate fair housing laws.
Fair Student Loans
Minnesotans who borrow money to get a better education deserve fair treatment when repaying those loans. But some of the big companies who control this business are misleading consumers by steering them into programs that charge more than they need to. While the U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos sides with fraudulent schools and the big lending companies, I will always stand with Minnesota students and families to fight for fairness and debt relief as your Attorney General.
A Level Playing Field
Minnesotans expect a fair economy where businesses can compete on a level playing field, but right now, more and more power is being concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer companies. This corporate concentration is killing Main Street Minnesota businesses. As Attorney General, I will crack down on unfair competitive practices that stifle our economy by cheating workers and consumers. I will advocate for farmers throughout the state to stop massive companies from violating antitrust laws that raise their costs and lower the prices they are paid. I will also fight employers who keep Minnesotans’ pay down through monopoly power even as corporate profits continue to grow.
Safe Workplaces for All Minnesotans
Minnesotans shouldn't have to choose between their health and safety and their paychecks. But that is exactly what the Trump administration has made them do by rolling back rules that keep workers safe on the job. Some of Minnesota’s top industries, including agriculture, logging, fishing, and iron and steel work are among the most dangerous jobs in the United States. As Attorney General, I will put a stop to multi-billion dollar companies taking shortcuts on worker health and safety just to squeeze a few extra dollars of profits. I will also ensure that all Minnesotans who work hard on the job, no matter their background, have an equal shot at getting hired and promoted. Things like your age, race, religion, nationality, disability status, sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity should never be used against you. I will protect workers from employment discrimination and stand with workers who exercise their legal right to join together and fight for higher wages and better working conditions.
Stop Predatory Lending and Financial Scams
No one should be subject to a loan with hidden and abusive terms when they need to fix their house or buy a car. All Minnesotans can agree it is wrong to use an internet solicitation to attempt to circumvent our state protections and charge 500% interest on a payday loan. I have spent my career fighting against predatory lending and as Attorney General I will continue this work to stop predatory lenders who violate our consumer protection laws. As our state population ages, seniors are increasingly being targeted by scammers and crooks. As Attorney General, I will put a stop to the abhorrent exploitation of seniors. This type of behavior has no place in Minnesota.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL
As a former civil rights and public defense attorney for 16 years, I know the value of a good lawyer to protect the rights of all to be free from discrimination and harm. As Attorney General, I will defend women’s rights, keep our immigrant neighbors safe, and protect Minnesota seniors from fraud and abuse.
Defend the Rights of Minnesota Women
As Attorney General, I will be a strong advocate for women’s rights, from health care to the workplace. I will defend access to safe health care choices for Minnesota women. I will crack down on pay discrimination, and hold employers accountable who fail to ensure a safe and respectful workplace for Minnesota women. I will also work to ensure that big corporations and financial interests don’t charge women more simply for being women. All Minnesotans deserve a fair shot and equal treatment in our society.
Protect Seniors from Fraud and Abuse
Minnesota seniors contribute so much to our society. They volunteer in our communities, help drive our nation-leading voter turnout, and often play an important role in child care for working families. That is why it is essential that we protect older Minnesotans from fraud and abuse. Right now, scams frequently target senior citizens, through aggressive and misleading phone calls and internet-based fraud. As the People’s Lawyer, I will hold these fraudsters and scammers accountable. I will also crack down on nursing homes and other senior care facilities that allow harm to come to our seniors through neglect or abuse. Senior citizens and their families shouldn’t have to worry about whether they will be safe in the facilities we trust to care for them.
Defend LGBTQ Rights
From the Trump Administration on down, LGBTQ rights are under attack. I will defend health care access for all, regardless of gender, gender identity, or sexuality, and will ensure the freedom of people to marry who they love is protected. As Attorney General, I will also crack down on discrimination in all its forms, including gender, gender identity and sexual orientation, to ensure equal treatment in the workplace, housing, and throughout our society.
Stand With Our Immigrant Neighbors
Minnesota has a proud immigrant tradition, from those seeking economic opportunity to those fleeing violence abroad. As Attorney General, I will fight efforts by the Trump Administration to remove protections from DREAMers who contribute so much to our economy and society. I will ensure that our immigration detention system is humane, and free from mistreatment, and will prioritize efforts to reunite families who were heartlessly separated at the border. I will stand up to the un-American, discriminatory Muslim Travel Ban. Our country is at its best when we welcome those fleeing horrendous conditions, not when we fan the flames of bigotry and division.
Provide Leadership and Support to Local Governments
County attorneys often look to the Attorney General for resources and assistance when prosecuting complex and high profile cases. As Attorney General, I will ensure that every county attorney has the support and expertise necessary to fairly enforce our criminal laws. This will include particular attention to combating the sex trafficking that is all too prevalent in Minnesota.
Rehabilitation and Community Engagement
Minnesota has a comparatively low prison population, but those numbers are growing, with one of the highest probation and parole rates in the country. These Minnesotans face barriers to education, employment, housing, and political participation that make it harder to complete their sentence and become a productive member of their community. As Attorney General, I will work to reduce incarceration, probation, and parole rates to enhance public safety, while helping people get back on their feet and successfully reintegrate into their communities. I will also ensure that every Minnesotan has equal access to justice, starting with increased support for our public defenders. I will also work to eliminate cash bail laws that prey on the poor and powerless in our system.
Keeping Minnesotans Safe from Gun Violence
Gun violence has disrupted the lives of Minnesotans of all ages and all walks of life across the state. I saw firsthand Washington’s failure to act on public demands to enact common sense gun safety solutions. As Attorney General, I will ensure that Minnesota is a leader in preventing gun violence by fighting for laws that require universal background checks for gun sales, a ban of the sale of assault weapons and large capacity magazines, and by keeping guns out of the hands of people who pose a risk to themselves or to others, including domestic violence offenders. I will also defend Minnesota’s laws by standing with the Attorneys General of 17 other states to fight bad federal legislation that will undermine our ability to establish and enforce our state gun safety measures.
Protecting Our Clean Air and Water
In the land of 10,000 lakes, Minnesotans understand the importance of protecting our environment. But Minnesota has already been hit hard by the impacts of climate change, with increasingly frequent floods from Duluth to Waseca. Climate change impacts everyone in our state, including working people, people of color, and seniors. As Attorney General, I will stand up to efforts to undermine the Clean Power Plan, which would improve Minnesotans’ health and our environment by transitioning to clean energy. We don’t have to choose between a robust economy and a clean environment; we can and must have both.
Criminal Justice and Drug Policy Reform
Our society has had decades to assess the impact of criminalizing marijuana use, and the clear result has been extreme racial disparities in its enforcement, higher incarceration rates, and too many lives ruined. It does not make sense to continue diverting taxpayer resources to arrest, prosecute, and detain people for possessing marijuana, when those resources could be used for rehabilitation programs and focusing on dangerous offenders. Like the majority of Minnesotans, I support the legalization of marijuana in Minnesota, and believe we must enact restorative justice for those who have been previously imprisoned for nonviolent offenses related to marijuana.
As your Attorney General, I will fight by your side every day to make health care more affordable and our economy more fair, and to protect the rights and freedoms of all Minnesotans.
