ICYMI: ATTORNEY GENERAL KEITH ELLISON JOINS PRESIDENT BIDEN FOR HISTORIC SIGNING OF PUBLIC SAFETY REFORM EXECUTIVE ORDER
MINNESOTA – On the 2nd Anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, Attorney General Keith Ellison joins President Joe Biden for the historic signing of the Executive Order to Advance Effective, Accountable Policing and Strengthen Public Safety. The executive order creates a national registry of officers fired for misconduct, directs law enforcement agencies to modify their use-of-force policies, restricts tactics like chokeholds and no-knock warrants, and more. This executive order creates much-needed changes to how we approach public safety in our county.
Throughout his career, Attorney General Keith Ellison has been a strong leader of public safety reform. In 2019, AG Ellison and the Commissioner of Public Safety John Harrington convened a historic working group — bringing together police, prosecutors, judges, and criminal justice reform advocates — to determine how to reduce deadly-force encounters with law enforcement. No other group like it exists in America. Three months before the death of George Floyd, the working group released 28 recommendations on how to reduce deadly-force encounters, several of which have already been signed into law.
Attorney General Ellison is also on the front lines of prosecuting violent crimes across Minnesota. Prosecutors in Greater Minnesota who often lack the resources to prosecute major violent crimes turn to the Attorney General’s office for help. Since Keith Ellison became Attorney General in 2019, his office has prosecuted 38 of these cases across 22 counties, and prosecutors across the state trust him to hold dangerous criminals accountable. Senate Republicans have blocked Attorney General Keith Ellison’s 3 times in 3 years multiple budget requests before the current spike in crime to help county attorneys in Greater Minnesota prosecute and bring justice to crime victims and their families.
Keith Ellison is working hard as the people's lawyer to take on the most serious and violent criminal cases for prosecutors across the state, protect Minnesotans from fraud and abuse, and protect families’ pocketbooks from price gouging and corporate bad actors.
